Relationships Are the Most Important Thing
Human beings need relationships to survive, especially when we’re young. That never changes, but as we grow, we transfer our needs for care to our friends and, eventually to our relationship partners. Conflict within those primary relationships can be extremely upsetting, interfering in every aspect of life. That’s why couples therapy can be such a useful thing to do, not just when there is conflict or troublesome communication problems, but also when a couple wants to plan for future challenges and strengthen a relationship that’s already doing pretty well.
Choosing a Marital Counselling Therapist
Finding the right fit for both parties is essential for successful counselling. A couple needs to feel safe and at ease with their therapist. At Shift Cognitive Therapy, we don’t side with one partner over the other, rather we believe that the couple’s relationship is our actual client and whatever is best for that third party will benefit each partner most. We provide a safe environment in which both partners can feel heard and understood, and where both can feel empowered to make positive changes.
Marital Counselling Strategies
We use several types of treatment approaches when dealing with communication problems in relationships, but the most common treatment we use is Emotion Focused Therapy for Couples. EFT works by focusing on the patterns and repetitive cycles of conflict within important relationships. Most couples tend to get along well until something (usually something very minor) happens and throws their relationship ‘off the rails’. In moments like that one or both partners might misinterpret the actions or intentions of the other, often jumping to conclusions that the other just doesn’t care, and then reacting with intense arousal that can spin the cycle around again.
EFT and other couples counselling techniques help our clinicians focus on getting to know both members of the couple, learning what their strengths and challenges are. We move forward with techniques to build skills and help the couple to overcome old, repetitive arguments so common in long-term relationships. The goal of EFT is to establish new ways of interacting, ways that strengthen the bond between partners.
